Program Structure

1. Program Duration
  • Each mentorship pairing will last for 5 months, with an option to extend if both mentor and mentee agree.
  • Regular check-ins and structured interactions are encouraged to maximize the effectiveness of the mentorship relationship.
2. Matching Process
  • The PDCA Membership Team will review applications and match mentors with mentees based on experience level, coaching interests, and goals.
  • Efforts will be made to align mentorship pairings within similar coaching environments (e.g., high school, collegiate, club).
  • Mentors and mentees will receive an introduction email detailing expectations and initial contact information.
3. Mentorship Expectations
  • Mentors: Provide guidance, answer questions, share experiences, and offer professional support to the mentee.
  • Mentees: Take initiative in learning, be open to feedback, set goals, and actively engage in discussions.
  • Both parties are expected to communicate professionally and respect each other’s time and expertise.

Guidelines for Mentors & Mentees

1. Commitment & Time Investment
  • Mentorship should include a minimum of one check-in per month (phone call, video chat, email, or in-person if applicable).
  • Additional communication and support are encouraged as needed.
  • PDCA recommends setting clear goals at the start of the mentorship to guide discussions and measure progress.
2. Suggested Discussion Topics

While each mentorship relationship is unique, the following topics can help structure discussions:

  • Technical Coaching Skills: Drills, progressions, spotting techniques, and dryland training.
  • Diver Development: Strength & conditioning, mental skills training, and injury prevention.
  • Program & Team Management: Recruiting, retention, team culture, and managing parents.
  • Business & Administration: Running a diving program, finances, fundraising, and sponsorships.
  • Career Advancement: Resume building, applying for coaching positions, and professional development.
  • Navigating NCAA & Compliance: Understanding SafeSport, Title IX, and eligibility rules.
3. Communication Guidelines
  • Mentors and mentees should establish their preferred method of communication (Zoom, phone, email, text, etc.).
  • Both parties should respond promptly and be respectful of each other’s time.
  • PDCA recommends keeping track of key discussions and progress over time.

Program Support & Resources

  • PDCA will provide mentorship guidelines and conversation starters to help mentors and mentees stay on track.
  • Webinars, workshops, and additional training resources will be made available to all participants.
  • If any issues arise, the PDCA Membership Team will offer support in reassessing mentorship pairings.

Program Completion & Feedback

  • At the end of the 5-month mentorship, participants will complete a feedback survey to evaluate the program’s impact.
  • Successful mentorship pairs may be recognized in PDCA communications and offered opportunities for continued involvement.
